You need to qualify and obtain a referral from a doctor to get this service, but you have a choice on which provider to use. The problem is that when it comes to having to use one of these providers, most people don’t know which companies are out there.
Many people are already overwhelmed because of the current situation, so some do not even have the energy to try and find another provider. Some people had a great experience with one provider for a family member and thought they had to use another provider’s services because that is who the hospital or doctor’s office set them up with. The law allows people to have choices. The problem is that most people do not know that.
Medical insurance is one of the largest factors of which provider can provide you service. The second biggest factor is staffing which means does the provider have the various professionals (nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, social worker, etc.) needed to help with your current needs or what the doctor prescribed. When someone qualifies for a home health provider, palliative care provider or hospice provider, those professionals tend to travel to where the patient is residing. This can limit the number of professionals available based on travel and demand.
This is where a case manager or social worker helps out because they generally prescreen and find a company that takes your insurance and has the staffing. Always remember, you have a voice when it comes to healthcare and your care.
